On July 6, 2023 World Artificial Intelligence Conference was grandly opened in Shanghai. Jim Cathey, Chief Commercial Officer of Qualcomm Technologies, delivered a speech on the theme "The Future of 5G Enabling Intelligent Connectivity" during the first day plenary session_Industry Development Forum. The full text of the speech reads as follows:
Congratulations on the successful holding of the World Conference on Artificial Intelligence for six consecutive years. It is a pleasure to participate in today's event. We are rapidly moving towards a world where people and everything are intelligently connected. The convergence of energy-efficient processing, distributed intelligence, and edge-side connectivity is driving this trend, with billions of smart devices connected to the cloud in real time and to each other. Smart terminals will be able to perceive, sense, act intuitively, and operate more autonomously. This trend is enabling new services, business models and experiences, enabling digital transformation of industries and changing the way people work, live, communicate and connect.
5G is essential for a smarter world. With superior performance, reliability and capacity, 5G is expanding beyond smartphones to connect everything and become a critical infrastructure for the digital economy. At the same time, 5G also helps AI expand to more edge-side terminals, not only promoting the scale expansion of intelligence, but also enabling context-related data generated on the edge side to be shared with the cloud in near real-time. To accelerate the development of 5G terminals and networks in China, we have established a 5G Joint Innovation Center with Chinese partners; we are also collaborating on millimeter wave technology, which is key to realizing the full potential and value of 5G terminals, networks and services.
In the smartphone space, the combination of 5G and AI is the foundation of the modern smartphone experience: enabling users to play and share 8K videos, take professional-grade photos and videos with real-time semantic segmentation, or play immersive multiplayer games with friends and have fun in intense battles. The combination of 5G and AI is also enhancing the accuracy of speech recognition and natural language processing, thereby improving the performance of voice assistants. These visions of technology-enabled extraordinary experiences are just the beginning.
Beyond smartphones, connectivity and intelligence are ushering in a new era of industrial innovation and digitalization. The use of smart sensors, robots, cameras, and AGVs is driving the transition to Industry 4.0-all connected via robust, reliable, low-latency 5G private networks. This will enhance automation and control capabilities, self-optimization capabilities and the use of digital twins. Enterprises are also able to collect and analyze massive amounts of data in real time to help improve business intelligence. In addition, 5G and AI will support businesses to use energy and natural resources more efficiently, helping to achieve sustainable development goals. The possibilities are infinite.
In the automotive space, as 5G and AI accelerate the digital future of the industry, cars are rapidly becoming "connected computers on wheels." This will enable the evolution to software-defined vehicles, enabling richer, safer experiences and greater autonomy, and introducing new digital services. Inside the car, we will see more personalized cockpit settings and content for the driver to meet the expectations of users to introduce digital lifestyles into the car. With 5G-enabled OTA upgrades, these experiences can be continuously upgraded throughout the life cycle of the car. Not only that, but with the help of cellular car networking (C-V2X) technology, cars will be able to communicate with their surroundings, including with other vehicles, further enhancing safety and convenience.
These technologies will also serve as powerful platforms for enhancing economic and social development in underdeveloped regions, helping to improve access to medical resources and services, including telemedicine and telemonitoring services. These technologies can also expand educational opportunities, allowing students to learn at any time of the day and providing a more personalized learning experience based on their learning patterns and pace. These technologies will also foster entirely new employment, business and entrepreneurial opportunities, improving livelihoods and resilience. We must work together to ensure that these technologies benefit everyone, regardless of socio-economic status.
