CTOnews.com, July 7 (Xinhua)-- Lawrence Livermore Lab announced on Wednesday that it has begun to install the components of the supercomputer El Capitan, which will be fully operational next year. A key component of the system will be AMD's upcoming "most advanced" InstinctMI 300 artificial intelligence GPU.

Lawrence Livermore wrote in a tweet: "We have begun to receive and install ElCapitan components, the first 10 billion-class supercomputer. Although it is still some time before it is officially launched in 2024, it is quite exciting to see years of work become a reality."

The machine is expected to be completed by mid-2024, surpassing 2ExaFLOPS in performance and becoming the world's fastest supercomputer at that time.

AMD has been testing the InstinctMI processor internally for months, and now it looks like the company is finally ready to start delivering these components to one of its key customers. According to pictures released by Lawrence Livermore Lab, lab engineers have installed a considerable number of servers.

Typically, supercomputer deployments install parts of the system first to ensure that everything at the hardware and software level works properly. So, although ElCapitan won't be fully operational until 2024, LLNL started installing its first parts about a year before it was done. The ElCapitan will be the first supercomputer in the industry to use a hybrid processor that contains both general-purpose processors and stream processors.
