CTOnews.com, July 7 (Xinhua)-- Apple paid 14.3 billion euros in tax to the Irish government in 2018 and deposited it into an escrow account set up by the government, and the latest report indicates that the account has lost nearly 1 billion euros (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 7.88 billion yuan).

In June 2014, the European Union launched an investigation into Apple's tax problems in Ireland. In August 2016, the European Commission ruled that Apple had illegally evaded 13.1 billion euros ($15.3 billion) in taxes in Ireland and that Apple must return the tax to the Irish government.

The Irish Ministry of Finance confirmed on Wednesday that the fund lost 259 million euros (currently about 2.041 billion yuan) last year, for a total loss of nearly 1 billion euros, according to The Irish Times.

The total amount of the account hosted by Apple was 14.3 billion euros, but now it is worth less than 13.4 billion euros.

The Irish government said that 253 million euros was due to a rise in interest rates (or yields) in the global debt market caused by a series of interest rate increases by the central bank last year, resulting in a decline in the value of bond investments, while another 6 million euros in losses were "operating expenses".
