CTOnews.com, July 5, a batch of aerospace-bred seeds introduced into Heihe City, Heilongjiang Province have recently germinated and emerged, and these seeds have been sent to space by recoverable satellites. At present, researchers are transplanting these seedlings, which are expected to blossom in 10 days and bear fruit in 20 days.

According to CTOnews.com query, space breeding is a new breeding technology that uses the space environment to mutate crop seeds or mutagenic materials to produce beneficial variation, and then return to the ground to cultivate new varieties. This technology can improve the stress resistance, yield and quality of crops, and provide guarantee for agricultural production and food safety.

It is understood that the space seeds introduced into Heihe City, Heilongjiang Province have two large varieties of tomato and pepper, totaling more than 20 small varieties, with a total of more than 7000. The selected seeds are excellent varieties tolerant to low temperature and weak light. The purpose of the experiment is to select vegetable seeds suitable for growing in alpine areas.

In order to test the performance of these space seeds, the Innovation Base of the Horticultural Branch of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Sijiazi Township, Aihui District, Heihe City, specially set up a number of greenhouses for transplanting and observing these seedlings. The staff said that the transplanted seedlings will be maintained under the condition of constant temperature and humidity, and various indexes will be measured and recorded at the same time, in order to analyze and evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of these space seeds.

It is predicted that these space seedlings will blossom within 10 days and bear fruit within 20 days, and the yield can be increased to more than 15% to 20% of that of ordinary varieties.
