CTOnews.com, July 5, European car giant Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares (Carlos Tavares) said in a recent interview with French newspaper Le Figaro that the company has no plans to transfer production of Peugeot Emai 208 electric cars from Spain to France because the idea is "uneconomical."

"Economic calculations related to the forced relocation of the project show that this is not in the interest of the company or the country," Mr Tavares said. "

European electric cars are generally more expensive than fuel-fueled cars, and European carmakers are planning cheaper electric models, encouraged by government subsidies. The French government has been hoping to push for more cars to be made in France because they have lower carbon emissions than imported models.

French Finance Minister Bruno Lemerre has said French manufacturers should produce more cheap small electric cars on top of high-end models. Lemerre said bluntly: "I know Tavares likes the challenge, I asked him to accept the challenge to build small electric cars in France, such as Peugeot 208. maybe not all the cars have to be produced in France, but at least partly in France."

Mr Tavares responded: "the results [of Peugeot 208s not produced in France] will tell us who made the right choice in the competition with Chinese manufacturers. The cost for Chinese carmakers to get to Europe is 20 per cent lower than that of local companies. 25 per cent lower."

CTOnews.com had previously reported that Strandis said last month that it would launch the new Citroen e-C3, the first economical electric car made in Europe, in mid-October, in response to fierce competition from cheap Chinese models in the European market.
