Linux Kernel 4.20 was released on December 23, 2018, introducing a number of enhancements, fixing Indirect Branch Prediction Barrier (IBPB) and Single Thread Indirect Branch Predictors (STIBP) issues, and mitigating the impact of Spectre vulnerabilities.

The Linux Kernel 4.20 update provides better Spectre Variant 2 userspace-userspace protection, stronger Spectre Variant 4 mitigation capabilities for ARM64 (AArch74) processors, support for AMD Radeon Pro Vega 20 graphics cards, support for C-SKY CPU architecture, and support for Hygon Dhyana x86 CPU, AMD Radeon Picasso and Raven 2 GPU.

With the release of Linux Kernel 4.20.17 maintenance update, the Linux 4.20 kernel has reached the end of its life, and there will be no subsequent maintenance updates in the future. For this Greg, it is highly recommended that users upgrade to the latest Linux 5.0 kernel branch.

Greg Kroah-Hartman wrote in his email log: "I released the 4.20.17 kernel version today. It is important to note that this is the last version of 4.20.y. Now that it has ceased support, please migrate to the 5.0.y kernel branch. All 4.20 branch users must complete the upgrade as soon as possible."

If you use the kernel from the Linux 4.20 series on the GNU / Linux distribution, you currently have two options: you can update to the latest Linux 4.20.17 version, or you can upgrade to the latest Linux 5.0kernel series. If you want a long-term support version, there are Linux 4.19 (recommended), Linux 4.14, Linux 4.9, and Linux 3.16 to choose from.
