CTOnews.com, July 5 (Xinhua)-- according to the latest tracking data released by market research firm Counterpoint Research, including augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), global extended reality (XR) shipments fell 33% in the first quarter of 2023 compared with the same period last year.

The report said that market leader Meta has "broken" the Quest series for more than two years. Quest 3 was released in June this year and launched this fall, and consumers are gradually losing interest in the XR market.

Meta reported that Meta remained number one in the first quarter of 2023, with cumulative shipments of the Quest series exceeding 20 million, of which the Quest 2 reached 18 million. In addition, Meta has announced the launch of Quest 3 later this year, which is expected to further boost sales and a successful transition from Quest 2.

The share of Meta shipments fell to 49%, the lowest level since the launch of Quest 2 in the fourth quarter of 2020, mainly due to Sony's launch of a successor to PSVR in 2016.

Sony's newly released PSVR2 has attracted a lot of attention from the video game brand user base, so Sony took second place with a 32% market share in the first quarter of 2023. In addition, PSVR2 shipped 1.2 times more than its predecessor in the first quarter of its launch.

PicoPico and DPVR ranked third and fourth with 7 per cent and 6 per cent market share, respectively. Although Pico's performance improved after its acquisition by byte jump, its shipments fell 38 per cent in the first quarter of 2023 due to a lack of attractive consumer use cases and high-quality content.

DPVRDPVR's shipments are mainly driven by its corporate partners and have established a strong relationship with them. These partners regularly place orders for thousands of units. However, delays in orders from education sector partners led to a 40 per cent drop in DPVR shipments in the first quarter of 2023.
