CTOnews.com, July 5 (Xinhua)-- A Japanese research team is developing a breakthrough drug that will allow humans to grow new teeth and plans to start clinical trials in July 2024 and put it into commercial use in 2030.

The team has previously tested it on animals that can promote the growth of "third-generation" teeth after deciduous and permanent teeth.

Katsu Takahashi, chief researcher and director of dental and oral surgery at Kitano Hospital, Osaka Medical Research Institute, said: "it is every dentist's dream to grow new teeth. I have been studying this issue since I was a graduate student. I believe I can achieve this goal."

Takahashi studied molecular biology as a graduate student at Kyoto University in 1991 and continued his studies in the United States.

He returned to Japan in 2005 and studied the subject further at Kyoto University. He found that a protein called USAG-1 restricts tooth growth, and the team believes that blocking the effect of this protein can produce more teeth.

Takahashi's team narrowed their focus to USAG-1 and developed a neutralizing antibody drug that blocks the function of proteins. The team gave the ferret a seventh incisor after taking the drug.
