CTOnews.com July 5 news, the well-known open source JPEG image codec libjpeg-turbo recently announced that it will stop the follow-up function development of the codec due to lack of funds.

Libjpeg-turbo is a JPEG image codec that uses SIMD instructions (MMX, SSE2, AVX2, Neon, AltiVec) to accelerate baseline JPEG compression and decompression efficiency on x86, x86-64, Arm, and PowerPC systems, while improving the progressive JPEG compression capability of x86, x86-64 and Arm systems.

According to the official website of ▲ source libjpeg-turbo, DRC, the chief developer of libjpeg-turbo, recently released version 3.0.0 and said that due to a shortage of funds, the codec will go into "maintenance mode" and may never be libjpeg-turbo 3.1.

DRC, an open letter from ▲ source developer DRC, says he will continue to fix Bug in libjpeg-turbo and release "bug fixes" throughout the 3.0.x life cycle; but there will be no more libjpeg-turbo 3.1 release series unless the project can get more funding to support subsequent development.

After inquiry, CTOnews.com learned that DRC claimed that the current funding for the libjpeg-turbo project was seriously insufficient. After the completion of version 3.0 Beta, the 2023 project budget has been exhausted, and the repair of the various Bug known in version 3.0.0 is expected to deplete the entire budget up to September 2024. Therefore, in the next 15 months, the 3.0.x version of libjpeg-turbo will not consider adding any new features (even small ones), and technical support will be limited.
