CTOnews.com, July 5 (Xinhua)-- most robots have only individual skills such as rolling, flying, walking or swimming, and the California Institute of Technology's Autonomous Systems and Technology Center (CAST) has now built an all-around robot that can do all of these skills.

The robot, whose full name is Multi-Modal Mobility Morphobot, is officially referred to as the M4 robot, which can handle all kinds of terrain, can fly, walk and swim.

CAST said the M4 is not the first robot to support multiple motion modes, but the highlight is that it uses the same components and does not rely on redundant systems, which helps keep the M4 compact and inexpensive, while allowing it to change its posture in the same way as animals.

Hinged wheel accessories are the key to the versatility of M4. When it is not flying, the robot can adjust the angle of the wheels to slide under low obstacles. It can even use foot-like wheels to shake under obstacles that prevent it from rolling.

The team also draws inspiration from how quadrupeds are raised on their hind legs to cross obstacles while keeping the rear wheels balanced.
