CTOnews.com, July 4 (Xinhua) according to market research firm Trendforce, Apple is developing an Apple Watch Ultra smartwatch with the next generation of microLED display, but the release of the device has been delayed again due to manufacturing problems, possibly not until the first quarter of 2026 at the earliest.

Earlier, display analyst Ross Young said in April that the Apple Watch Ultra smartwatch with microLED display would be released as early as the second half of 2025, rather than the end of 2024, as originally rumored.

Trendforce believes that Apple cannot carry out mass production because the problem of high manufacturing costs has not been resolved, so it has delayed the launch again.

It is reported that Apple has invested more than $1 billion (CTOnews.com Note: about 7.25 billion yuan) in the internal development of microLED technology over the past decade to reduce reliance on Samsung displays and strengthen control over the supply of key components in the display panel area.

The Apple Watch Ultra smartwatch is expected to be Apple's first device with a microLED display. The current Apple Watch Ultra uses standard OLED technology, while the microLED offers many of the advantages and improvements of the OLED. MicroLED is more energy efficient than LED displays and could significantly improve battery life for Apple Watch Ultra smartwatches and other devices that will adopt the technology in the future. And unlike OLED, microLED has little risk of screen burning, and microLED has a longer potential life. The microLED display also provides better contrast and faster response time because each pixel has a separate light and is brighter and brighter. In short, microLED is a more advanced technology than OLED and miniLED.

It has been revealed that Apple is already testing microLED displays for the Apple Watch, which are said to have brighter, brighter colors and the effect of content "drawn on top of the glass." Apple also plans to apply the technology to the iPhone and other devices.

TrendForce believes that the wearable device represented by smartwatch has a small display area, a small number of microLED, and a relatively low threshold for production technologies such as mass transfer, so it is the first choice to verify the feasibility of microLED as a display panel for mass production, and it is also one of the key applications to build solid requirements for microLED in the next few years.
