CTOnews.com, July 3 (Xinhua)-the World Chess Federation (FIDE) announced today that it will launch the VAR (Video Assistant referee) system for the first time in the 2023 West Asia Youth Chess Championship to help deal with controversial decisions in chess matches.

▲ Image Source PexelsVAR is a set of technical solutions to help sports referees. It has been widely used in many traditional sports, such as the Hawkeye system in tennis and volleyball, which can display the projection of the ball online at controversial times. In recent years, VAR has also been widely used in the field of football, and VAR has played an important auxiliary role in key decisions such as goals, penalties and red cards.

The International Chess Federation pointed out that the Premier League has introduced the VAR system since the 2019 / 2020 season, and the correct rate of key decisions has increased from 82% to 94%. On the one hand, it shows that the referee has a misjudgment rate of nearly 1/5 at the critical moment, on the other hand, it also shows the effectiveness of the VAR system.

The International Chess Federation said that the application of the VAR system in chess can be divided into three stages. The first stage is a controversial penalty, in which one player challenges the behavior of another, such as touching a piece but not moving it, which is an offence in a chess game.

The second stage is VAR review and suggestion, that is, referees can suspend the broadcast of the game in a special mobile phone App and use VAR to watch the video of the game to check the behavior of chess players.

The third stage is decision-making, that is, the referee makes a penalty according to the viewing results.

The International Chess Federation says VAR technology can increase the chances of referees making correct decisions and make the decision-making process simpler and more transparent to both referees and players.

CTOnews.com previously reported that FIFA first introduced the VAR system at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and introduced more advanced VAR semi-automatic offside technology during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. FIFA President Invantino has said that the citation of VAR technology is the most obvious example of FIFA's work to promote the use of football technology.
