CTOnews.com, July 3, according to Chinanews.com, a new research by the University of Science and Technology of China has made a breakthrough in the field of all-solid-state lithium battery. Professor Ma Ying of the university has developed a new type of solid-state electrolyte, whose performance and cost are better than those of similar products at present, which provides a new possibility for the industrial application of all-solid-state lithium battery.

All-solid-state lithium battery is a kind of lithium battery which uses solid electrolyte instead of liquid electrolyte. It has the advantages of high safety, high energy density and long cycle life. It is considered to be a subversive technology in the field of new energy vehicles and energy storage in the future. However, at present, the core problem of all-solid-state lithium battery is how to find a solid-state electrolyte material which can not only ensure the efficient conduction of lithium ion, but also achieve good deformability and low cost.

After years of research, Professor Ma Ying of University of Science and Technology of China has discovered a new type of solid electrolyte of oxychloride-lithium zirconium oxychloride, which has the same comprehensive performance as the most advanced sulphide and chloride solid electrolytes. Its room temperature ionic conductivity is as high as 2.42 mm Siemens per cm, which exceeds the 1 mm Siemens per cm required for application, and is in the forefront of all kinds of solid electrolytes reported so far. At the same time, its good deformability enables the material to reach 94.2% density under 300 MPA pressure, which can well meet the application needs, and is also better than sulfide and chloride solid electrolytes known for their deformability (less than 90% dense at the same pressure).

More importantly, the cost of raw materials is only $7 per kilogram (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 51 yuan), much lower than the current most cost-effective solid electrolyte, lithium zirconium chloride ($10.78 per kilogram), and less than 4 per cent of sulfide and rare earth-based, indium-based chloride solid electrolytes.

The results have been published in the authoritative international journal Nature Communications, and reviewers believe that the findings are "very innovative and original" and that lithium zirconium oxychloride materials are "very promising" and "beneficial to the commercialization of solid-state battery technology".

The experimental results show that the all-solid-state lithium battery composed of lithium zirconium oxychloride and high nickel positive electrode shows excellent performance: under the condition of fast charging for 12 minutes, the battery can successfully cycle more than 2000 times at room temperature.

According to the researchers, lithium zirconium oxychloride is a kind of solid electrolyte material with great potential and application value, which can achieve similar to or even exceed the performance of the most advanced solid-state electrolyte at very low cost. it is of great significance to promote the industrialization development of all-solid-state lithium battery.
