CTOnews.com, July 3 (Xinhua)-- Gfycat, one of the most popular GIF sharing sites in the world, recently issued an announcement saying that the site will be officially suspended from September 1. Snap, the parent company of Gfycat, plans to shut down the GIF database and delete all user content within weeks.

The announcement reads: "the Gfycat service is about to stop, please visit the website and log in to your account to save or delete your Gfycat content. After September 1, 2023, all Gfycat content and data will be deleted from gfycat.com."

CTOnews.com consulted public sources and learned that Gfycat was founded in 2015 to provide a platform where users can easily create, discover and share GIF. At its peak, the site had more than 220 million monthly active users, and its intuitive interface and large amount of UGC content helped it become the resource sharing platform of choice for GIF enthusiasts. The great success of Gfycat also attracted the attention of Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, and in 2017, Snap officially acquired Gfycat.

However, Gfycat has been withered by the advent of new platforms such as TikTok and Instagram in the past few years, especially as these new social media provide seamless GIF creation and sharing, which has completely replaced Gfycat by newcomers.
