CTOnews.com July 3 news, Nokia and OPPO patent war continues to escalate, the two sides launched lawsuits in many countries around the world to compete for the patent rights of 5G technology. On Tuesday, June 27, local time, a court in Mannheim, Germany, rejected a patent infringement lawsuit filed by OPPO against Nokia, arguing that Nokia's products did not infringe OPPO's patents and ordered OPPO to bear legal costs, the Daily Business Daily reported. This is one of a series of favorable rulings made by Nokia in Germany, the Netherlands and Brazil. OPPO, on the other hand, said it was just one of 11 patent cases it sued Nokia in Europe, and that there were further proceedings to follow and that there was no final conclusion.

The patent dispute began in June 2021, when the patent licensing agreement between Nokia and OPPO expired and the two sides failed to agree on a new 5G patent license agreement. Nokia believes that OPPO should pay patent fees according to its "fair and reasonable" offer, while OPPO believes that Nokia's fees are too high, which is not in line with its patent strength, and firmly opposes unreasonably high fees and litigation to coerce negotiations. The two sides then sued each other in China, Europe and other places, sparking a global patent war.

In this patent war, both sides have a huge patent portfolio and rich litigation experience. Nokia, a veteran company in the communications industry, has invested more than 140 billion euros in patent research and development since 2000. its patent portfolio contains about 20000 patent families, including more than 5500 5G-related patent families. Recently, Nokia also signed a new patent cross-licensing agreement with Apple. OPPO, as the leader of Chinese mobile phone manufacturers, has also increased its investment and layout in patents in recent years. According to OPPO, as of March 31, 2023, OPPO has filed more than 90000 patents worldwide and granted more than 46000 patents worldwide. In China, Europe and the United States and other places are in the forefront. Earlier, OPPO reconciled with Sharp and reached a cross-licensing agreement with it.

According to incomplete statistics, Nokia has filed a lawsuit against OPPO in 12 countries around the world, accumulating more than 100 cases. In Germany alone, there are more than a dozen patent cross-lawsuits between the two sides, of which Nokia filed more than 30 lawsuits against OPPO. Subsequently, OPPO launched a number of lawsuits against Nokia in Germany in August 2021. Although Nokia has filed lawsuits in the UK, France, China and Indonesia, its litigation decisions in Germany have been influential so far, with CTOnews.com noting that OPPO has emptied its official website in Germany since last year.
