Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com July 3 news, TSMC held a conference in Japan, introduced the progress of the N3E process node and its performance improvement. In addition, the company provides a roadmap for the next generation N2 process.

Kevin Zhang, senior vice president of TSMC, said that the company's growth rate accelerated, with investment reaching US $5.4 billion in 2022 (CTOnews.com Note: Currently about RMB 39.204 billion). In addition, the company has 8558 employees, indicating that the company is rapidly expanding its facilities and investing time and money in developing next-generation processes.

TSMC reviewed the evolution of previous process nodes and demonstrated the performance improvements of each derivative of the 5 nm process. In addition to the N5P, N4 and N4P processes, the company also released data for the new N4X node, saying it has improved performance by 17% and chip density by 6% over the N5 process released three years ago.

TSMC reiterated that the 3-nanometer process has started mass production since early 2022. However, the updated N3E process has been technically certified and will be commercialized in the second half of 2023. In addition, one of the advanced versions of the 3 nm family, the N3P process, will be put into production in 2024, improving performance by 5%, reducing power consumption by 5-10%, and increasing chip density by 1.04 times. Due to rapid demand from the automotive industry, TSMC also plans to launch N3AE nodes based on the N3 process but targeted at applications such as autonomous driving, which will initially be available to companies in the form of PDK kits for testing and supporting new processes.

Finally, the company mentioned its much-anticipated 2-nanometer process, which is under development and scheduled for production in 2025. TSMC will adopt nanosheet technology and abandon FinFET transistors, mainly due to differences in performance efficiency. Previous reports that 2nm technology would be available to Apple at a discounted price suggest Apple remains interested in the process.

Finally, TSMC Japan President Makoto Onodera took the stage to highlight the company's efforts to promote the local semiconductor industry. He said the state-of-the-art Kumamoto plant is planned and scheduled to go into production by the end of 2024, and the event aims to stimulate interest in TSMC's existing and next-generation processes among Japanese businesses.
