CTOnews.com, July 2 (Xinhua)-- although 2023 is called the "year of efficiency" by Meta, it turns out that Meta is attracting VR talent with ridiculously high salaries. According to the Washington Post, the company offers an annual salary of up to $1 million to attract good VR developers, far exceeding the market level.

Meta offers programmers who can create VR-related technologies an annual salary ranging from 600000 to nearly $1 million (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 7.26 million yuan), the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. Patrick McAdams, CEO of Andiamo, said the company's compensation level is "significantly higher than" most other game companies, "it is no exaggeration to say that their total compensation is twice or more than that of large game companies."

Meta is reported to have spent about $10 billion on metasmos in 2021 and another $15.9 billion last year on its Reality Labs division, which has lost about $19 billion over the past two years.

Meta is willing to pay "unusually high salaries", apparently to get the best developers to work for themselves, not for competitors. A former recruiter who used to recruit for Meta told the Washington Post that they usually don't face much competition because they "pay well above market" and cover multiple positions.

The report also said that in the past nine months, the average salary of all VR developers hired by Meta was close to $540000. By contrast, Apple offers VR developers a maximum compensation package of less than $500000, while Google pays its top developers about $440000.

Meta is trying to beat its competitors by hiring the best talent, but competition is still intensifying. Sony released the PlayStation VR2 in February, while Apple dropped a blockbuster on the market with its high-priced Apple Vision Pro.

An executive from Mini Game said he failed to hire a senior developer last year because Meta offered the developer an annual salary of $800000 and was likely to increase the total compensation to about $1 million through a performance bonus, and the developer did not have very unique experience and skills.

Meta shares are up more than 130% so far this year, according to the data.
