"Shadow tone" is the overall tone of the photo, which refers to the relationship between the light and shade, contrast, and levels of the picture. To put it simply, it is the performance effect of the photo.

When it comes to tone, we have to mention the "top ten tones" in photography, which is a relatively basic and practical theory. After we understand it, we can have a deeper understanding of photography.

So today I would like to share with you the relevant contents of the "Top Ten Shadows":

1. What are the "top ten tunes"? According to Ansel Adams (Ansel Adams), there are 11 subdivisions of tone from black to white:

After we remove the leftmost pure black and the rightmost pure white, there are only nine partitions left:

These nine partitions can be divided into three parts, which are low, medium and high profile, and each section contains three partitions. in the above figure, 123 partition is low-key, 456 partition is medium-key, and 789 partition is high-profile.

According to the light and dark span of the photo, we can be divided into short, medium and long tones. The short tone indicates that the dark span is small, the middle tone refers to a general span, and the long tone refers to a large span.

Low, medium and high notes are combined with short, medium and long notes, so we get nine tones:

Low and short key, low middle key, low long key, medium and short key, medium and long key, high and short key, high middle key, high long key.

The combination of pure black and pure white just removed forms the tenth tone-full-length tone.

The contrast between the light and shade of the photo is very weak, there is no obvious light and dark, and there is a "sense of air". The "candy color style" we discussed earlier is a bit similar to this tone, but brighter, between the middle tone and the high tone.

Strictly speaking, the histogram and photos above are not a typical full-length tone, because there is still a certain midtone, which is rarely used for reference, because there is almost no excess in the picture, and this tone is used in some minimalist, black-and-white photos.

3. With the application of tone, you can choose flexibly according to the actual scene and personal ideas, but don't be limited by these tone.

The first is the histogram. After understanding the tone, we should have a further understanding of the histogram. When we shoot and edit later, the histogram is a good reference tool. It is very convenient and important to know the tone and exposure of your photos through the histogram.

The second is the problem of contrast, the difference between light and dark span, short and medium length can actually be regarded as the difference of contrast, the higher the contrast is, the more obvious the difference between light and dark is, so we can understand the contrast from the perspective of tone. We can be more targeted in practice.

Finally, the curve tool, the curve tool is a sharp weapon that can directly control the low, medium and high profile of the photo, and the light and shade span and tone bias can be viewed and adjusted in it. We can make good use of this tool combined with the tone characteristics above.
