CTOnews.com, June 30 (Xinhua) Japan plans to teach teenagers the skills to make electric car batteries to cope with the industry's chronic labor shortage, Nikkei Asia reported.

Panasonic and Toyota are both members of the Battery supply chain Association.

As a first step of the program, about 40 students will take an experimental class on battery technology at Osaka Prefecture University School of Technology, a five-year vocational school, starting in December. Next year, similar courses will be offered in vocational schools, high schools and universities in other parts of Japan.

Masaru Miki, chief human resources officer of Panasonic Energy, said the company hired 50 students from vocational schools and high schools this year, but would need more relevant talents. Panasonic plans to hire 5000 employees worldwide by 2026, of which about 3000 are in North America.

Miki also revealed that in addition to Japan, Panasonic has been in talks with several U.S. community colleges to help train workers to service its planned new battery plant in the United States, including one in de Soto, Kansas. "if we want to do this work in depth, we may need to set up a 'off work'," Miki said. "
