CTOnews.com June 30 news, security analysis website Bsleeping Computer exposed ransomware Akira, the software mainly aimed at VMWare series of software, will encrypt the user's virtual machine image, users need to pay a high ransom to be able to put back files.

It is reported that this ransomware was discovered in March this year, mainly targeting Windows computers, but now hackers have also created a Linux version, the purpose is to encrypt VMware ESXi virtual machines.

Security analysts at Bsleeping Computer say Akira encrypts user virtual machine images faster than other Linux ransomware of the same type, making it "difficult for victims to react." Bleeping Computer also obtained ransomware samples for analysis, and found that there is a variable option of "encrypted file proportion" in the samples, which may be aimed at allowing hackers to control the corresponding encryption speed according to the different conditions of each infected machine.

Bleeping ComputerCTOnews.com found that other security analysis sites have also noticed this ransomware, such as security company Cyble said that since they discovered the ransomware in April, they have received reports of 46 organizations, most of which are located in North America, so the ransomware is not widespread, but it still cannot be taken lightly.
