CTOnews.com June 29, Apple and Spotify appeared in court again this week because of the EU antitrust case. Apple could face hefty fines if it is found to have violated EU law, and it is unclear when the EU investigation will end.

Spotify said in a statement that the recent App Store policy changes were "for show" and did not address the core issue of Apple's opposition to guidance rules. Apple's lawyer argued that the competition issue had been resolved in the past two years and that no changes were needed.

The European Union reached a preliminary conclusion in 2021 that App Store unfairly favors Apple Music over Spotify and other music streaming services.

In February, the EU dropped some of Apple's complaints about digital commission and internal purchases of Apple Pay, while the rest revolved around the way Apple banned apps from notifying customers of other subscriptions, such as through web browsers.

As Apple's lawyer points out, the company has relaxed such rules slightly since 2021. The "Reader" app can already apply for external link authorization, allowing its app to provide links to account creation or account management.

In a statement to Bloomberg, Spotify said the changes were not important to complaints and supported the current EU list of charges.

"these rules still exist today, and Apple's so-called changes haven't actually changed anything, just for show," Spotify said. "We support the European Commission and believe that this list of charges will address Apple's unfair business practices."

In fact, in some areas, developers can also use external link authorization to handle transactions, such as the appointment App in the Netherlands. However, Apple still requires developers to pay a 27% commission (CTOnews.com), even if Apple Pay is not used in the process.
