Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, June 29, according to ETnews, Apple has built a Micro LED test line in a South Korean display company factory. Apple is responsible for arranging Micro LED chips (transfer), while South Korean domestic enterprises are cooperating in the field of drive circuits (backplane).

Judging from the previous revelations, Apple plans to apply Micro LED to "Apple Watch Ultra" by the end of 2024, followed by the introduction of Micro LED panel technology into iPhone, iPad and MacBook series.

Last month, the Nikkei reported that Apple is actively engaged in mass production of the next generation of displays in order to reduce its dependence on rival Samsung and strengthen its control over the supply of key components. It is said that Apple has spent at least $1 billion (CTOnews.com Note: about 7.24 billion yuan) on Micro LED technology development and sample production in the past 10 years, in order to have more control over the next generation of display technology.

The source pointed out that Apple's Micro LED technology is currently in the prototype stage, and the company plans to let Apple Watch test the water first, and then tentatively complete the development of the relevant technology in 2025.

In fact, it is also mentioned in the report that Apple's research and development is not going well, especially in the home-made micro LED panel. This is mainly because the chip that controls the micro LED panel has an area of 1% of the LED panel chip.

Apple helps push micro LED panels to the ground through its mature supply chain, suppliers such as ams-Osram collaborate to develop micro LED components, LG provides substrates, and TSMC provides wafer chips.

The report also pointed out that Apple designed the driver IC for the micro LED panel and worked with a number of suppliers to design the equipment needed to produce the micro LED, thereby increasing micro LED panel production capacity.

In a paid article published by DigiTimes, Apple plans to upgrade the iPhone screen material from OLED to micro LED in the future to achieve higher brightness, lower power consumption, better contrast, and so on.
