CTOnews.com June 29--The 135-year-old National Geographic magazine is facing another tough time as it decides to lay off its last full-time contributors, the Washington Post reported.

The layoffs are the latest in a series of slimming actions by Disney, the magazine's parent company, involving about 19 writers and will also cut small video departments. In the future, National Geographic content will be outsourced to freelancers or cobbled together by the remaining editors.

The layoffs are the fourth since Disney bought National Geographic in 2015, with the last layoffs taking place last September when Disney laid off six senior editors. The fired employee also said that National Geographic magazine, which had been known for its excellent nature photography, had also cut back on photography contracts.

In an internal announcement last month, National Geographic magazine said that in order to further cut costs, starting next year, the magazine, which uses bright yellow boxes as brand logos, will no longer be sold through U.S. newsstands and will shift to online subscriptions.

At its peak in the late 1980s, National Geographic magazine had 12 million subscribers in the United States and millions more overseas. By the end of 2022, the magazine's subscriber base had dropped to 1.8 million. National Geographic was founded by the American Geographic Society, an organization founded by 33 scholars, scientists and adventurers, including Bell, inventor of the telephone.
