According to people in the semiconductor industry, Su Zifeng's visit is mainly due to the fact that Intel has revised its cooperation with TSMC in 3nm (mainly Arrow Lake and the new GPU), which will be a major crisis for AMD, where the PC platform remains in 4nm in the next two years.
Intel has lost money for two consecutive quarters as demand for PC has plummeted and inventory in the supply chain has struggled, while AMD has performed poorly over the same period, with first-quarter revenue of $5.353 billion (CTOnews.com note: about 38.756 billion yuan) down 9.1% a year.
To put it simply, the current NB and DT products of AMD will remain in the 4nm generation before 2025, in which the Hawk Point that is going to replace Phoenix Point in 2024 is still the Zen 4 architecture and 4nm process, while Krackan Point, which is ready to take over in 2025, has upgraded the Zen 5 architecture, but still uses the 4nm process.
On the other hand, Intel, although the cooperation with TSMC has been postponed due to the Meteor Lake series, the Arrow Lake series in 2024 has been confirmed to adopt the 3nm process, and TSMC will not only contract the GPU part, but also keep the CPU tile under contract. In this way, Intel with TSMC assists, AMD, which has not yet received 3nm orders, will lag behind.
Take a closer look, AMD in the DT platform this year's Raphael series uses the 5max 6nm process, the Granite Ridge series launched at the end of 2024 is also the 4x6nm process, the 2023 mainstream Cezanne and Phoenix Point are 7nm and 4nm, and the 2025 high-end processor Shimada Peak is based on 4max 6nm.
Overall, both DT and NB platform processors in AMD will remain in the 4nm generation until the end of 2025, and the EPYC series, which is the first to enter the 3nm generation, will not be launched until the second half of 2024 at the earliest, while the Zen 6 architecture processor with a 2nm process is not expected to appear until 2026 at the earliest. Until then, it will be difficult for AMD to compete with Intel in terms of craftsmanship.
