Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Thanks to CTOnews.com netizens Wu Yanzu in South China for the delivery of clues! CTOnews.com, June 29 (Xinhua) the European Union is enacting a series of laws aimed at limiting the power of technology giants, the latest of which is called the data Act. The bill will regulate how technology companies such as Apple use European consumer and corporate data and protect users' privacy and choice.
Currently, if you are a loyal user of the Apple ecosystem, you may store a lot of data on iCloud, including contacts, messages, calendars, photos, videos, emails, notes, documents, device backups, etc. If you want to move this data from iCloud to other cloud services (for example, because of rising prices), this is not an easy task, and that is exactly what the new law wants to change.
According to CTOnews.com, data portability means that consumers should be free to migrate their online data from one service to another, completing the process as quickly and easily as possible. This can increase the selectivity of consumers and break the monopoly advantage of the tech giants. Facebook, for example, had to come up with tools to download and transfer data.
EU countries and EU lawmakers reached a preliminary agreement on the bill on Tuesday, Reuters reported. The bill will make it easier for users to switch to other data processing service providers, introduce safeguards to prevent cloud service providers from illegally transferring data, and provide for interoperability standards for reused data between departments.
Apple will almost certainly be affected by the new law. Although Apple supports the principle of data portability and is a founding member of the data transfer Initiative (Data Transfer Initiative) (as are Meta and Google), it does not currently provide a simple process for non-technical users to achieve this. The new law may require Apple to provide a smoother process for consumers to transfer all their iCloud data to other cloud services such as Dropbox or Google Drive at the click of a button.
In addition to simplifying the process of user data migration, the upcoming law will also give users more say in deciding which data can be used by tech giants. For example, if you have smart home products that communicate with brand-owned servers, you will be able to choose which data to share and how the company uses it.
Like all EU laws, the process of passing the bill is long and complex, with many stages to go through, so don't expect it to come into force soon. It is expected to take at least two years for the data Act to become law and apply to technology companies such as Apple.
