On June 28, 2023 MWC opened in Shanghai. Jim Cathey, chief business officer of Qualcomm, delivered a speech on the theme of "5G+AI empowering the Digital Future" during the GTI International Industry Conference. The full text of the speech is as follows

Good afternoon. I'm glad to be in Shanghai again, and it's a great honor to attend this year's GTI Summit. At present, we are rapidly moving towards a world of Smart Internet of people and everything. The convergence of energy-efficient processing, distributed intelligence, and network edge-side connectivity is driving this trend, allowing billions of smart terminals to connect to the cloud and to each other in real time. At the same time, this trend is enabling new services, business models and experiences, not only to help the industry change digitally, but also to change the way people work, live, communicate and connect.

5G is crucial to the digital future. 5G was launched at the right time, it appeared before the epidemic, realized in the early stage of the development of AI, and laid a solid foundation for the future 6G. With excellent performance, reliability and capacity, 5G is the key infrastructure of the digital economy.

In China, Qualcomm cooperates with companies in the ecosystem in the face of new opportunities brought about by 5G. In order to better take advantage of these opportunities, we have established five 5G joint innovation centers in conjunction with local governments and partners, and we are also cooperating in millimeter wave technology. this technology is the key to realizing the full potential and value of 5G terminals, networks and services. The large-scale deployment of 5G is expected to have a significant impact on global economic growth. In China, 5G is expected to generate 10 trillion yuan in total economic output and support 13 million new jobs by 2035.

To expand 5G to more industries, Qualcomm is working with industry leaders such as China Mobile to promote the evolution of 5G Advanced. 5G Advanced, the second phase of the 5G standard, will bring enhanced features and features that enable new industries, use cases, and experiences, including AI-driven system design, new optimizations for XR, and NR-Light (or RedCap) for Internet of things endpoints with lower complexity. Qualcomm is also working on new technologies and features on the road to 6G. To ensure interoperability and scalability, we need a globally unified 6G standard, which is critical to the development and success of the mobile industry.

AI is another technology critical to the digital future, enabling terminal perception, sensing and more autonomous operation. With the accelerated growth of the number of connected terminals and data traffic, it is not feasible to transfer all content to the cloud for processing. In order to expand AI on a large scale, it is very important to integrate AI processing on the terminal side. You may not realize it, but AI has been used in smartphones and touches almost every aspect of the smartphone experience-from images to modem and RF performance to malware detection.

Running AI on the terminal side also brings many benefits, such as higher immediacy and reliability, more personalized experience, and better privacy protection. Currently, we are extending these capabilities to PC, Internet of things terminals, cars, and XR headsets, bringing greater intelligence to these rich consumer products.

Large language models and generative AI are a major trend at present. As these models are accelerated, it will become impractical to run the models only in the cloud because of the large scale of the data generated and the high cost of infrastructure, power, and maintenance requirements in the data center. Based on terminal-side intelligence, Qualcomm is driving the inevitable shift to a hybrid AI architecture, that is, distributing AI workloads between the edge-side terminals and the cloud to support highly optimized and efficient AI processing. Qualcomm believes that the hybrid AI architecture will play an important role in enabling the AI large language model to realize its full potential.

The combination of 5G and AI is bringing innovation opportunities for various industries. In the industrial sector, technologies such as stronger automation capabilities, predictive maintenance and digital twinning are driving the transition to Industrial 4.0. China's move to promote the industrial application of 5G is impressive, especially the plan to build more than 10,000 5G plants in the next five years. In the automotive field, cars are becoming "networked computers on wheels", integrating advanced processing, intelligence and connectivity. Chinese carmakers are at the forefront of the digital transformation of cars and have launched mass-produced models that support 5G and C-V2X.

Qualcomm has been rooted in China for nearly 30 years. Over the years, we have been working closely with the China Mobile ecosystem, including operators, terminal manufacturers and application developers, to support their continued growth. I am very proud that Qualcomm has established strong relationships with many Chinese companies and is committed to continuous cooperation to help China accelerate its digital future.
