Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, June 28 (Xinhua)-- the European Union is considering some large-scale technological interventions, such as blocking the sun or changing the earth's weather patterns, to lower the earth's temperature as its new strategy to deal with climate change, Bloomberg reported. The EU is likely to release a draft document later this week to assess this.
The purpose of this document is to analyze the consequences of accelerated global warming, such as water or food shortages, and the new conflicts or mass migration waves that they could trigger. The document will also involve an assessment of the potential and risks of atmospheric remodeling technologies, which may include reflecting or blocking solar light, preventing them from reaching the Earth's surface, or changing the climate.
The European Commission document shows that the EU will join international efforts to fully assess the risks and uncertainties of these so-called climate geoengineering, including solar radiation corrections. These interventions are based on scientific progress and concerns that global warming exceeds the target of 1.5 degrees Celsius. One possible way is to inject aerosols into the stratosphere, increasing the concentration of particles in the atmosphere and reducing the amount of sunlight that reaches the earth's surface.
The EU hopes to invite the international community to discuss this issue and to formulate rules in this area.
The document also acknowledges that these technologies "pose new risks to humans and ecosystems, while they may also exacerbate power imbalances between countries, trigger conflicts, and cause numerous moral, legal, governance and political problems."
However, CTOnews.com notes that the plan is also controversial, with critics arguing that the interventions distract attention from tackling rising emissions, the main cause of global warming, and could have unexpected side effects, such as changing the earth's rainfall patterns.
