CTOnews.com, June 28 (Xinhua)-- scientists at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany have successfully used 3D printing technology to create a miniature heart chamber that can beat independently for more than 100 days, New Scientist reported.

Researchers at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, ▲ source, said they used human cardiomyocytes, collagen and hyaluronic acid to build a unique "biological ink". The ink was then injected into the tissue structure of the gel-supported heart cavity with a nozzle, which, after printing, melted the gel to form a real artificial heart cavity.

The cardiac cavity is the chamber at the bottom of the heart, and the complete heart consists of four chambers. The researchers printed a miniature heart chamber with a height of 14 mm and a diameter of 8 mm, which is only 1/6 of that of a real human heart. The miniature chamber begins to beat a week after printing and continues to beat 100 days later.

Next, the researchers plan to inject a second kind of biological ink so that the miniature heart cavity can grow blood vessels and eventually print a complete heart.

CTOnews.com previously reported that 3D printing technology is widely used in the field of life sciences. British scientists implanted conductive circuits into living bodies for the first time in April through 3D printing technology, which is expected to be applied to the field of brain-computer interfaces in the future.
