CTOnews.com June 28, the Zijinshan Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced yesterday that an international team led by researchers Fan Yizhong and Jin Zhiping has discovered the most intense optical ultraviolet flare detected by humans so far. It comes from the gamma burst GRB220101A detected by the Swift satellite on January 1, 2022, whose ultraviolet optical radiation is about 4 billion times that of the sun, breaking the 14-year record.

According to the Tu Yuan research team, gamma bursts are the most violent stellar-scale bursts in the universe, and their radiation energy is mainly concentrated in the soft gamma ray band. Therefore, the period of soft gamma ray radiation is also known as the instantaneous radiation stage of gamma bursts. After the end of instantaneous radiation, people can often observe X-ray, optical and even radio radiation that lasts for weeks or even years, which is often called afterglow radiation.

The absolute magnitude of the discovered GRB220101A reaches-39.4, which is the only optical ultraviolet radiation source with an absolute magnitude of-39 detected so far.

The results were published online on June 26 in the journal Nature Astronomy (Nature Astronomy).
