Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, June 28, according to Apple's official documents, the Vision Pro virtual reality headset can only move within 3 × 3 meters of security when using a fully immersive VR experience. Once the user's head goes beyond this area, the system automatically stops the VR experience and turns on the external perspective. This restriction may be to prevent users from accidental collisions in VR, but some people think it is too limited for some types of games and some commercial or industrial uses.
The news was revealed on social media by Hans Karlsson, chief technology officer of VR creative agency Mimir. He said Apple has weakened the function of the VR so that users can't move more than 1.5m. 'This means that Apple's VR is only suitable for sitting and playing, and can't carry out activities beyond the sofa area, such as table tennis and other games that need to move,'he said.
CTOnews.com notes that Apple's official documentation confirms this: "when you start a fully immersive experience, visionOS defines a system boundary that extends 1.5m from the initial position of the human head. If their head is moved out of the area, the system will automatically stop the immersive experience and turn on perspective again, which is an assistant to help prevent people from colliding with objects."
Since the range of movement in any direction is limited to 1.5 meters, this means that the user is limited to a "box" of 3 × 3 meters.
With regard to Apple's decision, some people think that it is just a conservative approach taken by Apple in the early days to avoid accidents when users are not familiar with the VR experience. They predict that this restriction may be relaxed or lifted as users adapt to VR. If so, it is also a cautious strategy for Apple.
Some people think that Apple may want to encourage users to sit down and use the VR to reduce fatigue and make users get used to wearing the Vision Pro for longer. One netizen commented: "I support Apple's decision. For the head to be popular and widely used (a few hours a day), it must be mainly a sitting experience. The experience of room size or strenuous exercise will always be minority because of the limitations of space and fatigue."
Analyst Neil Cybart believes Apple prefers to promote augmented reality (AR) rather than virtual reality (VR), at least at first. He says that VR is only a relatively narrow subset of Vision Pro use cases. Apple also has strict control over the way VR is used on devices, which is in Apple's vested interest. However, the company is open to VR-related applications or development.
If Apple's 3 × 3 meter limit is really only for pure VR scenarios, then Vision Pro can still implement some of the use cases shown by mixed reality display manufacturer Varjo, such as designers walking around a full-size virtual car, because this is an AR environment where users can see their own space to move around.
