CTOnews.com, June 27 (Reuters)-A court in Munich, Germany, ruled today that former Audi CEO Rupert Steed (Rupert Stadler) was sentenced to one year and nine months probation for negligence and fraud in the 2015 Volkswagen emissions scandal, becoming the first former Volkswagen board member to be sentenced for the incident.

Prosecutors initially hoped to fine Steed 2 million euros (currently about 15.78 million yuan) on the grounds that he was well-paid and owned numerous financial and real estate assets during his tenure at Audi and Volkswagen.

CTOnews.com previously reported that the "emission gate" incident first occurred in 2015, when Volkswagen was found to be installing emission control software to manipulate vehicle emission levels to avoid scrutiny of true emissions and pollution levels.

The way engineers operate the engine on the test bench meets the legal emission values, but not when actually driving on the road, prosecutors said. After the scandal came to light, Steed was accused of failing to stop the sales of the cars involved.

Steed's lawyer said in May that he did not know the vehicle was manipulated and the buyer was hurt by it, but admitted that the possibility of this should be taken into account and more attention should be paid during his tenure.

Wolfgang Hartz, a former Audi executive on trial with Steed, was sentenced to two years' probation and a fine of 400000 euros (currently about 3.156 million yuan). The third defendant, former Volkswagen engineer Giovanni, was sentenced to one year and nine months' probation and a fine of 50,000 euros (currently about 395000 yuan).
