CTOnews.com, June 27 (Xinhua)-- the U.S. Department of Agriculture has recently approved Good Meat and Upside Foods, subsidiaries of Eat Just, to sell cell-cultured chicken in the United States, the first time such a license has been issued by the U.S. government, according to CNBC. The two companies have previously received approval from the U. S. Food and Drug Administration.

▲ Upside Foods in accordance with the decision adopted, the USDA will inspect the production facilities of cultured meat in the same way as traditional meat processing plants and slaughterhouses. In addition, the two companies must have the label "cell culture chicken" on the packaging of their products. Previously, only Singapore allowed the sale of cell-cultured chicken.

In order to produce cell-cultured chicken, stem cells from animal fat or muscle are first put into the culture medium, and then the medium is put into a bioreactor to promote cell proliferation and growth, resulting in products that are very similar to traditional meat in vision and taste.

Upside Foods said it had received its first order from Dominique Crenn, the chef Michelin 3-star in San Francisco. Good Meat said Jose Andres, a famous chef in Washington, had submitted his first order to the company. Due to limited production capacity, the two companies' cell culture chicken is currently available in a limited supply.

As consumer interest in vegetable meat wanes, investors are betting on the cultured meat industry instead. So far, Eat Just has raised $978.5 million (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 7.084 billion yuan), while Upside Foods has raised $608.4 million (currently about 4.405 billion yuan), according to PitchBook.

McKinsey had predicted that artificial meat would account for 1 per cent of the global meat supply by 2030, equivalent to $25 billion (currently about 181 billion yuan) in sales.
