Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
According to news on June 27, Verge, a well-known technology media, recently partnered with a research company to learn about their use, expectations and concerns about artificial intelligence in a survey of 2000 American adults. The survey results show that although many people have not yet used artificial intelligence and are afraid of its potential, they still have high expectations for the future development of artificial intelligence.
The following is the compilation:
Artificial intelligence is about to change the world, but we don't know how it will change the world. Some people see the rapid progress of artificial intelligence in the field of creativity, eliminating shackles, automating repetitive work, and discovering new learning and teaching methods. Others worry that artificial intelligence interferes with life in destructive ways, generates misinformation, reduces job opportunities, and even poses a threat to our security.
How should we deal with this emerging technology? Technology leaders, lawmakers and researchers are all weighing different approaches. Some in the industry want big technology companies to take the lead in regulation, focusing on future threats such as possible human extinction. EU officials are more concerned about the current danger and how to ban dangerous use cases. At the same time, many young artists just want to make sure they are not replaced by machines.
To understand what people really think and expect about artificial intelligence, the insights and research teams of Verge and Vox Media, in collaboration with research and consulting firm The Circus, surveyed more than 2000 American adults. The survey found that although many people have not yet used artificial intelligence and are afraid of its potential, they still have high hopes for what artificial intelligence can do one day.
Who is using artificial intelligence? suddenly, artificial intelligence is everywhere. Image generators and large language models have become the core of new startups and powerful engines for people's favorite applications. More importantly, artificial intelligence has not only aroused discussion in the scientific and technological circles, but also become a hot topic in the whole society. There is widespread concern that students will use ChatGPT to cheat, be fooled by pictures generated by artificial intelligence, and that artificial intelligence will steal artists' ideas or even replace them completely.
Despite the endless reports, the use of these new tools is still quite limited, especially dedicated artificial intelligence products. Young users are more exposed to and use these tools, and millennials (roughly equivalent to post-80s and post-90s) and generation Z (roughly equivalent to post-950s) are the main users.
The survey found that only 1/3 of respondents had tried artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT, Bing and Bard, and most were unfamiliar with the companies and startups that developed them. Survey data show that only 57 per cent of respondents have used or heard of ChatGPT, while 43 per cent do not know what ChatGPT is. 46% of respondents have used or heard of Bing chat robot, and 54% don't know what it is. Although there are many disruptive companies in the field of artificial intelligence, such as Stability AI and Midjourney, large technology companies still dominate. Although OpenAI is an exception, it is now a big company given its market capitalization and its deal with Microsoft.
The survey found that the definition of artificial intelligence tools is very vague. The survey mainly asked respondents what they thought of specialized artificial intelligence services such as ChatGPT or Midjourney. However, many companies are adding artificial intelligence capabilities to existing software, such as image generation in Photoshop, text suggestion in Gmail and Google Docs.
Will artificial intelligence technology have a significant impact on society? So far, the use of these tools has been relatively limited, but respondents have high expectations for the impact of artificial intelligence, surpassing other emerging technologies. 74% of the respondents said that artificial intelligence will have a big or small impact on the whole society. By contrast, the proportion of electric vehicles is 69 per cent, compared with 34 per cent of non-homogenized tokens (NFT).
How do people use artificial intelligence? The main driving factor of the recent artificial intelligence boom is generative artificial intelligence. It can automatically generate text, help users brainstorm, edit text, and create pictures, audio and video. These tools are being quickly integrated into professional systems. For example, Photoshop can regenerate some images and WordPress can automatically write blog posts. However, for most users, a considerable amount of audit work is usually needed to make artificial intelligence work properly.
The survey shows that people mainly use artificial intelligence tools for search, brainstorming and artistic creation. Creativity is the most common application for those who use artificial intelligence tools. People use artificial intelligence to make music (31%) and video (31%), create stories (29%) and modify photos (37%), while more professional applications such as programming (18%) are rare. In addition, more people (68 per cent) use artificial intelligence systems to find answers to questions, which means that chatbots such as ChatGPT, Bing and Bud may replace search engines.
The survey also found that artificial intelligence expands creativity. Most people who use artificial intelligence tools (45% to 61%) think they are better at writing articles, sending emails, programming, etc., and have produced content that could not have been produced, of which artistic creation is the most popular (61%). Considering that the artificial intelligence image generator is more advanced than the audio or video tools, this result is reasonable.
Concerns about the generation of works of art by artificial intelligence artificial intelligence image generators such as Midjourney and StableDiffusion are typical cases of generative artificial intelligence. These systems are trained based on a large amount of data crawled from the Internet, usually without the consent of the original creator. The moral issue of this practice has been hotly debated, but its legality has now been questioned in many lawsuits. In addition, these controversies quickly spread to the creative field, such as AI music generation.
The survey shows that people have mixed feelings about how to deal with these problems. Many people have used artificial intelligence to copy the works of artists, but many people want to ban it. The majority of respondents (70%) believe that artificial intelligence tools should be compensated when they imitate their creative style. However, there are also many people (43%) who do not want to limit these features. In fact, nearly half of the respondents (44%) said they tested artificial intelligence systems by generating such content.
There is a desire for better artificial intelligence standards that agree with technology leaders, and respondents generally support the regulation of artificial intelligence. More than 3/4 of respondents believe that it is necessary to formulate relevant laws and regulations to regulate the development of artificial intelligence. At present, the European Union is conducting final negotiations on the introduction of an artificial intelligence bill, and the United States has also held hearings to develop a relevant legal framework.
The survey also found that there is a strong demand to improve the standards of artificial intelligence systems and disclose their use. For example, the vast majority of respondents are in favor of tagging deeply forged content generated by artificial intelligence. However, many widely supported principles are difficult to implement in practice, such as training artificial intelligence language models based on fact-checked data, or prohibiting deep forgery of portraits without their consent.
About the future of artificial intelligence: excitement and worry when predicting the impact of artificial intelligence on society, the survey found that 21% of respondents were excited about it, 29% were worried, and 32% had both feelings.
Respondents in the survey mentioned a variety of dangers, with 63% mentioning unemployment, 68% mentioning privacy threats and 67% worried about abuse. People obviously pay more attention to these potential dangers than active applications such as new medical methods (51%) and empowering economic development (51%). The survey also found that many people made bold predictions about the future impact of artificial intelligence. Fifty-six per cent of respondents thought "people will build an emotional relationship with artificial intelligence", while 35 per cent said they would be willing to do so if they felt lonely.
Many people in the industry are now warning of the "survival risk" that artificial intelligence systems may bring, that is, super intelligence may destroy human beings. Thirty-eight percent of people in the survey also agree that artificial intelligence will destroy human civilization.
When asked about the potential impact of artificial intelligence on personal life and career, the survey found that 31% of respondents were worried, 20% were excited, and 31% had both feelings.
In view of the uncertainty of artificial intelligence, people are open to what may happen in the future. Fifty-one per cent of respondents expected perceptual artificial intelligence to emerge at some point in the future, while 64 per cent had no problem with companies trying to create it.
