Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Wu Fei brother's left hand clue delivery! CTOnews.com June 27 news, I believe CTOnews.com small partners are no stranger to Google AR glasses, the project has been ups and downs, has not opened the commercial market. According to a source obtained by Business Insider, Google has terminated an AR glasses project that has been in development for many years.

Google AR glasses According to three people familiar with the matter, the internal code of this glasses is Iris. Earlier this year, Google went through layoffs, restructuring, and Google AR / VR director Clay Bavor announced his departure, and the glasses have since been shelved. A google spokesman declined to comment.

CTOnews.com inquired that foreign media The Verge first reported the existence of Project Iris in January 2022, describing the device as similar to a pair of ski goggles. Google employees, however, say Ski Goggles is actually a separate AR base project for Samsung's partner products, while Iris is a series of devices more akin to glasses.

Google plans to develop and launch Iris as its own product and consolidate talent through acquisitions, according to the latest reports. In 2020, the company announced the acquisition of North, a Canadian startup that makes AR glasses. Earlier versions of Iris were very similar to North's first device, Focals, while later versions of Google demos featured translation.

The North Focals report also said that since shelving Iris glasses, Google has been focusing on building AR software platforms, hoping to license them to other head-display manufacturers. Google employees are developing the software using a prototype platform internally called Betty. An employee described the glasses platform as "AR Android."

Insiders say Google leadership keeps shifting Iris 'strategy, causing the team to constantly reorient itself and frustrating many employees.

Two employees said Google could one day relaunch Iris Glass, and that some teams are still experimenting with AR technology. Other teams were moved to software platforms and Samsung partnerships, they said.
