CTOnews.com, June 27 (Reuters)-A Tesla car that opened the Autopilot crashed into a truck parked in the same lane on a Pennsylvania highway on Friday night, raising questions about the carmaker's driving assistance system, Reuters reported.

Police in Pennsylvania said on Monday that the Tesla car was in the middle lane when a Freitlin semitrailer truck was parked in the same lane, providing traffic control for the closure of the right lane. Police said Tesla's car lost control and crashed into the rear of the truck because it used the Autopilot function. Police also said the 18-year-old male driver was charged with "careless driving". According to the police, there were no casualties in the accident.

Tesla has no public relations department and did not respond to requests for comment.

CTOnews.com noted that US regulators have been investigating a series of accidents in which Tesla's car collided with a parked emergency vehicle when it turned on the Autopilot function. In February, a Tesla Model S crashed into a parked fire engine in Walnut Creek, California, killing its driver and triggering an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Tesla said that Autopilot functions allow cars to automatically turn, accelerate and brake in the same lane, but these functions require active supervision by drivers and do not allow cars to drive independently.
