CTOnews.com, June 26 (Xinhua)-- Japan's Ministry of Land and Transport is promoting the research and development of unmanned heavy construction machinery in order to build a base that can stay on the lunar surface, Kyodo news agency reported.
▲ Picture Source Pixabay has accumulated rich technical experience in removing sand from disaster sites that are inaccessible to human beings. Japan's Ministry of Land and Transport plans to use these technologies in cooperation with schools and enterprises, and to flexibly use artificial intelligence (AI) technology to build a lunar base in the 1930s through the Artemis lunar exploration project, which is led by the United States and in which Japan is also involved.
The plan has been openly solicited and selected by Japan's Ministry of Land and Transport, and 12 projects have been selected this year.
Companies such as Shimizu Construction are developing an unmanned construction system in which AI recognizes lunar topography and obstacles and controls the automatic walking and construction of related machinery. Because of the delay in communication between the moon and the earth, it is difficult to carry out precise remote operation, which makes the construction machinery need to operate without instructions. The person in charge of Shimizu construction also said that whether it can maximize the reduction of human judgment and intervention is the key to the automation of the lunar base.
In addition, the Global Positioning system (GPS) cannot be used on the moon, and companies such as Dacheng Construction, in order to grasp the position information on the lunar surface, are exploring whether the position estimation technology of sensors can be used, and plan to carry out lunar surface positioning simulation experiments on the dunes in Japan.
Other selected projects include the design of the size and shape of heavy machinery that can carry out stable excavation on the lunar surface (CTOnews.com Note: the gravity of the lunar surface is only about 1/6 of that of the earth's surface), as well as exploring surveying methods for making 3D geological maps of the lunar surface.
