According to CTOnews.com, June 26, Professor Kim Yuanpei of South Korea's Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) and his team used manganese ferrite (Mn3-xFexO4) nanoparticles as the anode material of lithium-ion batteries to improve the energy storage capacity and charging speed of lithium-ion batteries by regulating electron spin. The research results have been published in the journal Advanced functional Materials and have been selected as the cover article.
According to CTOnews.com, it usually takes at least 30 minutes for electric vehicles to recharge, even if fast charging is used. If we can charge electric cars as quickly as we can refuel, we can alleviate the shortage of charging stations.
The efficiency of lithium-ion battery depends on the ability of anode material to store lithium ion. Recently, a research team led by Professor Jin Yuanpei has developed a new type of anode material. They used a novel self-mixing method to synthesize manganese ferrite nanosheets with large surface area through a simple replacement reaction process. This new material can store more lithium ions, breaking through its theoretical limit.
In this study, the research team designed a new method to synthesize manganese ferrite nanosheets, which has both excellent lithium ion energy storage capacity and good ferromagnetism. First of all, a replacement reaction was carried out in the solution mixed with manganese oxide and iron to form a heterostructure compound with manganese oxide on the inside and iron oxide on the outside. Then, the team used hydrothermal method to prepare manganese ferrite nanosheets with a thickness of only nanometer. This method uses highly spin-polarized electrons and significantly improves the ability to store large amounts of lithium ions.
This innovation enables the team to effectively exceed the theoretical capacity of manganese ferrite anode materials by more than 50%. The surface area of the anode material is increased, so that a large number of lithium ions can move at the same time, thus improving the charging speed of the battery. The experimental results show that it only takes 6 minutes to recharge the battery with the same capacity as the electric vehicles currently on the market.
This study simplifies the complex process of preparing anode materials and makes a breakthrough in improving battery capacity and accelerating charging speed. Professor Jin Yuanpei, head of the research team, said, "We provide a new understanding of how to use electron spin to modify the surface to overcome the electrochemical limitations of traditional anode materials and increase battery capacity." He is optimistic about the development, saying it could improve battery life and reduce charging time for electric vehicles.
The research is supported by the medium-term researcher Program and Advanced Research Center Program of the Korean National Research Foundation and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Communications, as well as the next-generation rechargeable lithium-ion battery performance improvement and new manufacturing technology development program of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
This may be a major breakthrough in the field of lithium-ion battery chemistry. If the technology can be commercialized, a new standard will be set. Even for small systems such as mobile phones, a 50% increase in capacity would be a major change. Moreover, maintaining the same capacity can also save the use of lithium. The 6-minute full charge is unheard of, and it is hoped that this technology can be commercialized as soon as possible.
