CTOnews.com June 26 news, Japan capacitor (MLCC) Dachang Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. recently announced that by 2028, Japan's domestic Kanazawa Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Sendai Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. and Finnish subsidiaries will invest a total of about 10 billion yen (CTOnews.com Note: Currently about 502 million yuan) to triple the silicon capacitor production capacity.

At present, the application of silicon capacitors is limited to medical equipment, but it is expected to expand to applications such as smartphones and servers in the future. Murata hopes to capture more market demand in time through investment and production increase.

Silicon capacitors are fabricated using semiconductor manufacturing processes, and their dielectric layers are silicon materials with better stability. Compared with the current mainstream capacitors, silicon capacitors have better capacitance density, reliability, high frequency characteristics and other advantages, aging time can be as long as 10 years, its rated temperature can even be as high as 250℃, in harsh environments have better performance.

However, the current price of silicon capacitors is dozens of times that of ordinary MLCCs, so their application scope is concentrated in areas such as high-value-added, cost-insensitive cutting-edge medical equipment. However, considering the advantages of silicon capacitors in terms of thinness and thinness, silicon capacitors are also quite good choices for smartphones with increasingly tight internal space. Murata's silicon capacitors can be as thin as 0.05 mm.

In March, Murata announced that it would invest about 50 million euros (currently about 392 million yuan) in its French subsidiary by 2024 to increase silicon capacitor production capacity. Murata's investment plan will establish the same production system in two Japanese factories and a Finnish subsidiary to achieve a global supply of silicon capacitors.
