CTOnews.com obtained from the Ministry of Education that the Information Technology Chinese coded character set is a practical need to strengthen cultural self-confidence and promote the inheritance and development of excellent Chinese traditional culture, and it is also the most important basic standard in the field of Chinese information technology. The standard was first issued in 2000 and revised for the first time in 2005.

The new edition of the Information Technology Chinese coded character set contains a total of 87887 Chinese characters, an increase of more than 17000 obscure Chinese characters over the previous edition, not only including all Chinese characters in the General Standard Chinese character Table, but also covering most of the names of people and places in China, as well as characters used in literature, science and technology and other professional fields.

The drafting units of the new GB font include China Institute of Electronic Technology Standardization, Beijing Asia Zhiye Technology Co., Ltd., Microsoft (China) Co., Ltd., Beijing Beida founder Electronics Co., Ltd., and Weifang Beida Bluebird Huaguang Phototypesetting Co., Ltd.
