CTOnews.com, June 25, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Genna Raimundo (Gina Raimondo) recently announced that the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will set up a new public working group on artificial intelligence (AI). The working group will further solve the problems brought about by the rapid development of AI technology on the basis of the success of NIST artificial Intelligence risk Management Framework (RMF).

The Commerce Department said the working group would recruit volunteers and technical experts from the private and public sectors and would focus on the risks associated with generative AI, as generative AI is driving rapid changes in technology and markets.

NIST sets short-term, medium-term and long-term goals for the working group. In the short term, the working group will provide guidance on how to use NISF's AI risk management framework to support generative AI research and development. In the medium term, the working group will support NIST's work on testing, evaluation, and so on, related to spanning AI. In the long run, the working group will explore the possibility of effectively using generative AI to solve social problems, such as health, environment and climate change.

CTOnews.com previously reported that in the face of the rapid development of generative AI, governments are trying to regulate it with a legal framework. In addition to the US, the European Parliament is also preparing to introduce targeted regulatory measures on the fair use of AI, while countries such as Japan and South Korea are considering relatively more tolerant regulatory plans.
