CTOnews.com, June 25, according to the Yomiuri Shimbun, Japan's Ministry of Education, Sports, Science and Technology recently announced that it will launch a large-scale research project in the next fiscal year to digitally reproduce the structure of the human brain and seek treatments for brain-related diseases such as dementia and depression. The department said the plan was the first in the world.

The plan will first develop a database of brain-related research accumulated in Japan, such as brain images of patients or experimental data from monkeys similar to humans, according to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology. After that, the supercomputer will use the data of brain neural circuits, brain cell functions and related pathogenic genes to express these complex physiological mechanisms in mathematical formulas and reproduce them in digital space.

The goal of the plan is to use supercomputers to analyze the disease state of the brain in this digital space, to develop effective treatments and new drugs, and to find ways to identify abnormal conditions that cause the disease, so as to achieve early detection and prevention.

The new plan will consolidate Japan's existing research results through open recruitment and build a research system in which industry can also participate, the Ministry of Education, Education, Science and Technology said. The department plans to apply for a budget of about 10 billion yen (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 502 million yuan) for the project next year for database construction and maintenance, as well as research in the field of brain nerves.
