When using the sharpness tool, raising the value will make the light-dark boundary area darker on the dark side and brighter on the bright side, but these changes are limited to the edges.

After improving the "sharpness", we can see that after the "sharpness" adjustment in the second picture, there are some "gradient bars" in the area of the light-dark boundary, through this adjustment, our photos will look clearer and enhance the detail texture.

When you look at this, some people may think of "contrast". It does have something in common with "clarity". Let's take a look at it through two pictures:

After increasing the "contrast", this is the effect of the contrast adjustment, you can see that the contrast between light and shade becomes larger, the dark part is darker, the bright part is brighter, and it is aimed at the photo as a whole.

Figuring out these points will not confuse "sharpness" and "contrast", and can be adjusted reasonably as needed.

However, in the later stage of the "sharpness" and "contrast" adjustment, we should grasp the "degree", otherwise it will make the photo look unnatural.

Especially when adjusting "clarity", poor use will be counterproductive, making the photo look "dirty":

Excessive "sharpness" adjustment will lead to the overflow of details and fill the photo with many "useless elements". The photo may look more obvious and the details highlight, but it feels like excessive HDR effect, looks fake, and looks too heavy, completely unnatural and "dirty" in the later stage.

After increasing the definition excessively, the details of the photos are all enhanced, and dirty shadows also appear on the walls. It should also be noted that when the contrast suddenly increases sharply, dark shadows may occur at the dense boundary of light and dark. This is more obvious in photos with less exposure, and the shape of the shadow similar to smoke indicates that the photo is not suitable for high definition.

How to use the sharpness tool properly? Clarity is a more practical tool, but after we understand its function above, we can find that it is not omnipotent, and there are even some "side effects". When we use it, we can adjust it slightly, and it is rarely used to improve it.

The photos with large light and shade contrast can be moderately improved, such as night scenes, indoor lighting photos, etc., in order to highlight the details and contours, you can improve some, but not the higher the better, but also the need for moderation.

If we like black-and-white photos, we can also make good use of the "sharpness" tool, because it can well represent the detail texture and texture.
