Talking about what quantum computing is, Liu Yangwei pointed out that quantum computing has two major characteristics: "superposition" and "entanglement." The first is "superposition". "entanglement" is the relationship between qubits, just like the telepathy of twins, even if something goes wrong at a great distance, the other will feel that no matter how far away the two quanta are, they will have the super-distance phenomenon of sensing each other. These two characteristics make quantum science and technology have great advantages in four fields, such as quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing and quantum simulation.
He illustrates, for example, that it may take 1 billion years for a traditional computer to decompose a large number, while a quantum computer can complete it in only eight hours. This is because quantum computers can take advantage of the superposition feature and process 2048 bits of data at the same time, rather than one bit at a time, as traditional computers do. This has a great impact on cryptography and information security, because existing cryptographic systems will soon be cracked.
In addition, quantum simulation is also a promising field. Liu Yangwei said that for example, a lithium-ion battery with 76 electrons needs a storage space of 10 to the 10th power of TB to simulate their behavior with a traditional computer, while a quantum computer simulation requires only 76 bits. This is of great help to pharmaceutical development or finding the best path, such as the research and development of electric vehicles.
Liu Yangwei stressed that any substance with switching characteristics can be used to make traditional computers; similarly, any substance with superposition and entanglement properties can be used to make quantum computers. At present, some people use photons, diamonds and other substances to make quantum computers, but it has not been determined which material is the most suitable. He said Hon Hai is making every effort to develop quantum computers, with the goal of launching a 10-bit quantum computer by 2025 and providing 10-bit quantum computing power to the outside world through the cloud.
