In July 2015, Amazon celebrated its 20th anniversary with its first Prime Day global shopping promotion, which once exceeded Black Friday in terms of variety and quantity.

Part of the Prime Day promotion is aimed at getting new Prime subscribers, promoting Amazon products and services, and boosting sales mid-year. Amazon's competitors, such as Target, Walmart and Best Buy, also sell goods at discounts during events to entice consumers.

This year, Amazon will introduce "invitation-only" deals for the first time, where its Prime members can send invitation requests to Amazon to get discounts on "items that usually sell out quickly." Amazon will also offer Prime Day deals on other retailers 'websites through its Buy with Prime service.

Amazon's "Buy with Prime" service, first launched last April, allows Amazon Prime members to shop directly from third-party merchants 'online stores and enjoy the same Amazon experience, including fast, free shipping, seamless checkout and free returns for eligible orders.

Adobe Analytics data shows that Amazon's U.S. online sales exceeded $11.9 billion during Prime Day last year, up from 2021.

Amazon broke with tradition last year with two Prime promotions. In addition to the traditional Prime Day, a second promotion, called the Prime Early Access Sale, launched in October in an attempt to boost sales ahead of the Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping seasons.

This year, Amazon will also host two promotions. Earlier this month, Amazon notified sellers that it would host a fall promotion called Prime Fall Deal Event in the fourth quarter. A specific date hasn't been set yet, but Amazon has begun accepting item submissions from sellers.
