CTOnews.com, June 21 (Xinhua)-- European new car sales rose for the 10th month in a row in May, with demand for electric vehicles particularly prominent, according to Bloomberg.

According to data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) on the 21st, the number of new car registrations in Europe in May was 1.12 million, an increase of 18% over the same period last year, while the increase in electric vehicles was as high as 66%. Although some parts shortages remain, the overall supply capacity of carmakers is improving.

Tesla's aggressive price reduction strategy more than doubled its sales in Europe from January to May, driving the rapid development of electric vehicles in Europe. Felipe Munoz, an analyst at Jato Dynamics, said other plug-in models, such as SAIC's MG brand, were also popular in the European market: "consumers seem to respond well to the offers offered by the two companies, Tesla and Mingjue."

From January to May, sales of pure electric vehicles in Europe grew by more than 40 per cent to more than 730000. Among the major markets, Italy and Germany led the overall growth of new car registrations in May, up 23% and 19% respectively.

CTOnews.com had previously reported that 559733 electric vehicles were sold in 30 European countries in the first four months of this year, up 37 per cent from a year earlier. In the same period, European fuel vehicle sales were just 550391, down 0.5 per cent from a year earlier. This also means that in Europe, where fuel vehicles were first developed and sold, electric cars have completed a historic surpassing of fuel vehicles.
