CTOnews.com June 21 news, talent shortage has become a common problem in the global semiconductor industry, in Taiwan's semiconductor ecosystem, the imbalance between men and women is even more serious. In order to encourage more women, especially students, to join the industry, leading semiconductor companies and academia in Taiwan have taken a series of measures, according to Digitimes.

The MediaTek Foundation has launched the "Girls! science and Technology Action" project, which recently invited 40 female college students from Taiwan to visit its headquarters in Hsinchu. The students had lunch with MediaTek's chairman, Cai Mingjie, and discussed career planning with him. Lin Shujuan, senior vice president and director of human resources at MediaTek, said nearly 40 per cent of students majored in literature, law or business management, and many of them taught themselves or took programming courses. She said that these female students are full of ambition to explore their work in the field of science and technology and are not limited by their majors.

CTOnews.com noted that Mr Tsai has said publicly many times that the field of integrated circuit design requires a lot of manpower to provide a better working environment and pay than labor-intensive work. He also said that young women are welcome to join the industry.

In addition, it is reported that TSMC is targeting several top girls' high schools in Taiwan to attract more female students into the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Scholars say women have some qualities that are critical to technological development, including carefulness, empathy and better handling of complex tasks. If more female talents join the industry, the bottlenecks and restrictions faced by Taiwan's science and technology industry are expected to ease.

The increase in the number of women workers in the semiconductor industry will expand the talent pool and help balance the gender ratio. In addition, gender equality is also an important indicator of corporate ESG (environment, society and governance).
