A screenshot of an internal discussion shows that in a survey conducted in May, only 47 per cent of employees surveyed said they would stay and work under such circumstances, down from 70 per cent in November. A Microsoft spokesman refuted the figures, but said the number of employees who responded positively to the problem had declined.

Microsoft says an average of about 400 employees take part in the survey every day, compared with a total of more than 200000. Microsoft has announced that it will not raise its salary this year and will reduce bonuses and stock awards.

Satya Nadella, Microsoft's chief executive, has informed employees that the company will stop pay rises (internally known as "performance increases") and cut budgets for bonuses and stock awards in response to the tough macroeconomic environment affecting many technology companies.

In an email later released by Microsoft's chief personnel officer, Katherine Kathleen Hogan, instructed managers to reduce "special rewards" to employees. "more people need to be in the middle," Hogan wrote. "

Internal sources show that the change has once again hit the morale of Microsoft employees. Microsoft also made layoffs and announced in January that it would cut 10, 000 jobs, even in its most important cloud business unit.

Screenshots of internal discussions show one employee asking at a recent meeting: "how does the leadership plan to boost morale? morale has hit rock bottom and it feels like there is no light at the end of the tunnel. To be honest, I don't remember the last time I received an email with a positive attitude from an executive! please don't take it for granted."

At this time last year, Microsoft promised a big pay rise to catch up with its competitors. The company's annual evaluation cycle usually begins with a performance review in April, followed by a notice on how performance affects compensation on August 15, and an award notice on September 15.
