CTOnews.com, June 20 (Xinhua)-- Matt Buti, head of Microsoft Game Studio, said that Microsoft does not plan to get involved in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) because the market is too small to meet Microsoft's game success criteria, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Booty said that Microsoft's games need to reach about 10 million players to be successful, while VR and AR currently do not have such an audience. He also said that Microsoft is lucky to have some big IP to build a continuous game series and a large community.

Booty's view is different from the strategies of companies such as Sony and Meta (formerly Facebook). Sony launched the PlayStation VR2 in February and is said to have sold 600000 units within six weeks of launch, surpassing the initial sales of the previous generation. In March, Sony President Hiroki Totoki said he thought the PS VR2 was likely to exceed the total sales of the previous generation, which sold 5 million units at the end of 2019. Meta revealed earlier this year that its Quest VR had sold nearly 20 million units.

CTOnews.com noted that Phil Spencer, the boss of Microsoft's gaming division, sparked controversy over comments on VR in November 2019, which some saw as contempt for the technology. He called VR a relatively niche and "isolated" form that was at odds with his vision of games as a "shared" entertainment, adding that "no one asked for VR" in Xbox user feedback. Spencer later clarified his comments, saying that he "likes" the development of the gaming industry in different areas, but that VR is "not our focus." He said in February 2020 that while Xbox does not support VR, he hopes that one day the field will become "so important that we have to join." By the next year, Spencer reiterated that Xbox had no interest in developing VR hardware.
