According to the news on June 20, the latest recall notice on Tesla Electric heavy truck Semi shows that the company may have produced only 36 electric trucks in 3 months.

At a news conference in December, Elon Musk, Tesla's chief executive, excitedly announced that Semi, Tesla's electric heavy truck, had begun delivery to Pepsi, calling Semi "the best truck on the road". He positioned Tesla Semi as an important step in reducing global carbon emissions, and people will replace dirty fuel trucks with cleaner, quieter electric trucks in the future.

Tesla electric heavy truck Semi made its debut in 2017 and was originally scheduled to go into production in 2019. After four years of waiting, Semi finally ushered in its first delivery.

However, Tesla is still trying to increase the production of the electric heavy truck and may even produce only one truck within two weeks, according to a recall issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) last week.

Tesla trucks manufactured from November 30, 2022 to March 15, 2023 need to be updated with software, according to the recall notice. The update reportedly addresses a software flaw in which drivers can ignore the warning that the door is unlocked.

The recall notice also announced the number of products involved in the recall, a total of 36.

This figure is consistent with the number of Tesla electric heavy trucks that Pepsi currently claims to own. In February, Mike O'Connell, PepsiCo's vice president of supply chain, said: "We have 15 trucks in Modesto... and then 21 will be deployed in Sacramento."

The recall is the second recall launched by Tesla Semi. In mid-March, NHTSA issued a recall notice covering Tesla trucks made between November 30, 2022 and February 28, 2023. The interval between the two recalls means that Tesla produced only one electric heavy truck in 15 days.

Of course, some of the electric heavy trucks produced by Tesla may not be included in the recall notice. In addition, Tesla has begun to increase the output of electric heavy trucks since mid-March. But the figures suggest that the company is a far cry from its initial goal of producing 50, 000 trucks in North America by the end of 2024.

According to the National Association of Automobile Dealers (NADA), American companies bought a total of 254000 heavy trucks in 2022.

In the first quarter of 2023, Tesla produced nearly 441000 electric vehicles worldwide.

The company is investing more in truck production, spending $3.6 billion to expand facilities at its Nevada superplant. It was reported in March that a new production line in Nevada planned to produce five electric heavy trucks a week.

However, Musk himself played down the Semi production target he announced earlier. At a conference in Texas last week, Musk thought Teska would not start mass production of the Tesla Semi until the end of next year. He mentioned the problem of battery supply.

Musk added: "the demand for electrification will increase significantly in the future, and we will do everything we can to meet the demand."
