CTOnews.com, June 19 (Xinhua)-- International teams from Peking University in China, University of Tokyo in Japan, University of Durham in the UK, University of Catania in Italy and NEC in Japan recently announced that they have successfully developed the world's first underground navigation system using μ particles, muPS. The relevant research results have been published in the recently published American "iScience" magazine.

According to the research team of the ▲ image source research team, μ particles are elementary particles, which are produced when cosmic rays accelerate their reaction with the Earth's atmosphere when they are affected by high-energy events in space, such as supernova explosions. The particle is so permeable that it can almost pass through artificial objects at the speed of light in a vacuum.

The muPS announced this time is to use μ particles for underground space navigation (location information detection) to replace the GPS that cannot be used because radio waves cannot reach the ground. MuPS uses μ particles that can penetrate soil and underground structures to determine the exact location of the user.

The system is composed of ground station and user terminal. Although the accuracy has not reached the goal of 1m at present, it has achieved higher accuracy than GPS single point positioning in urban areas.

In addition to underground space, the technology can also be used to identify indoor and undersea locations, which are expected to be installed on autonomous mobile robots in the future.
